Where did you grow up? Where did you go to school?
I grew up in Houston Texas, and I got my biochemistry degree at the University of Texas at Austin. I also attended the University of Phoenix in San Jose when I was already working and wanted to expand my knowledge.
What sparked your interest in Science?
In college, I had an internship at Schering-Plough Research Institute in NJ and had my first taste of drug discovery screening and automation. I realized how software can play a really important role in science!
Did you have any specific role models? If so, who were they?
My chemistry and organic chemistry professors reinforced my interest in science by making it fun! It is not just reading and taking tests, but enjoying the real life applications and creating tangible things. I remember synthesizing a custom detergent for a research project, and the professor allowed me to use his lab.
What would you say to a young person considering a career in science?
It is important to enjoy what you do and wanting to know how everything works. Whenever you have a process, you have an urge to try to find ways to make it better and more efficient. It is a great way to get buy-ins from others by showing how their work is actually improved.
What is important to you personally? I.e.what things do you value most in life?
I enjoy continuous learning. It always seems to open a door to new possibilities. I try to share that with my family too.
What are some of the challenges you have faced either in your career or personally that you feel have helped you become the successful person you are?
Sometimes what you're working on just doesn't work no matter what. After understanding the root problem, you recognize that some things need to fail early so that you can start in a new direction. I've always hated to "give up" on anything, and it has been a thorn to get over it. I've learned the hard way that it is not about giving up, but being able to pivot and find a better way to proceed.
What do you enjoy about being part of the Studylog team?
The best part of Studylog is the people here! We definitely have characters, and in a good way. Also, being able to work directly with customers is very rewarding.
What do you do for fun outside of the lab?
I enjoy exploring new places and finding good food.
